If I could find someone to sort through my stacks of Gypsy Caravan photos, we are talking since 1991, wow, wouldn’t that be a blessing? Even just from the past year. Are we haven’t even started on the video clips! Everyone is wanting youtube stuff, and I can’t get there…

Tribal Fest and the Caravan!

Ah, we had such a great time on our last roadtrip…to Sepastopol, CA and Tribal Fest. The Gypsy Caravan Dance Company, with the Caravan Dance Collective and the Caravan Soul Collective International dancers, 11 of us gals, drove the 12 hours from Portland to dance, shop, watch other dancers, and schmooze with the tribes…

and this just emailed to me…makes it all worthwhile! (thanks Lia!)

Hi, Ladies.
Just wanted to let you know that watching your group dance at TF10 moved me to tears – it was so lovely and for me, epitomized what Tribal Bellydance is all about.

Tribal Fest–Here we come!

**We are proud and delighted to share the Tribal Fest stage with our troupe from Portland, Oregon, combining the Gypsy Caravan Dance Company with the Caravan Dance Collective and the Collective Soul International dancers!

Thanks for your years of support and for your tribal spirit.

Eleven of us from Portland and our dancing sisters from around the world will take the stage together on Saturday, just after 6 pm…Will you be there?

I have just returned from performing and teaching at the Cues and Tattoos Tribal Bellydane Festival in Seattle, more on that later, and now it is time to pick the winner for the Gypsy Caravan CD, Awakening! Excited to draw a name…

Below is what she wrote in response to my request:

tell me what kind of music makes you move, groove, and dance; and why.

Hello Paulette – I’ve only recently started following your blog, but I’ve known of your site for a while now and I just wanted to say it really helped inspire me to explore more about bellydancing. After I graduate college I hope to move to Portland and hopefully learn more about tribal style from the Gypsy Caravan.

As for your question – really, almost any music that I love, and has a good beat, I am happy to dance to. Whether it’s traditional Balkan music, rock, electronic, pop or metal, if it moves me then I am inspired to move. I guess, the power of music is to touch the soul, and dancing is an expression of that, so I’m not too picky.

Oh, that is so true about music touching the soul. If I cannot feel a connection with a musical piece, a link, an inner beat that speaks to me, I can’t dance to it. And my movement comes from that touch, whether it be a glimmer or a bang on the head, it reaches in, down deep, and comes out in my hips, my hands, my smile, or whatever part of me needs to speak the dance.

Thanks everyone who wrote in. I do love to hear about your dance and music and art and farmworld! It is such a great way to share our thoughts and actions here on this blog.

Caravan Dance Collective at the Alberta Street Fair in Portland!

Not only did the dancers perform at Pirate Festival on Sunday last weekend, but they also danced at the Alberta Street Fair. Here they are with a bit of sass and sword action!

Caravan Dance Collective wow the Pirate Festival!

The Portland Pirate Festival was a great success this last weekend, with sunny skies and a huge crowd. Of course, the CDC dancers took over the festival Sunday, starting their performance at 10:15 in the morning, parading and dancing through the crowds all day, and ended with a big she-bang at 2:00 in the afternoon!
