Good morning! and One More Thing

Greetings, after a sunny few days in Sarasota Florida! What a glorious beach, hot sun, and some down time, along with a beautiful beach wedding and pool parties!

but, I continue to think about our One More Thing–OMT.

Have any of you done any volunteer work? What a precious way to give back to the community, by giving just  a little bit of your time to help, whether it be people, animals, the land. Think about how rewarding that can be, even if you are strapped for extra time, even if just a few hours a month.
Someone or something needs a bit of care. And you can give it.

Knowing that you might want to, how do you find the right venue for your beliefs and your time? I”ve wanted to do something to help, and then think of soooo many ways to share my time. I love to work with animals, so the SPCA or Humane Society is a natural. I love to dance, and have been asked by my local retirement home to come and share some movement with the local residents. That sounds great to me, a no-brainer. And what fun too.

How about you? Do you already volunteer? Where at? Got some good suggestions? I’d love  to hear them…

Here are just a few ideas for you to get started…

AARP lists volunteer ideas too. http://www.aarp.org/

The National Park Service is gearing up for its centennial in 2016, and over the next year or so, they’ll really start lining up volunteers for seasonal positions.

A senior friend his wife live way up in the mountains, but my husband and I go do work for them such as cleaning moss of the roof.

If it was my grandparents, or me, I’d hope other people would do the same.

I’ve been to a number of retirement homes and it’s amazing how a little effort can make their lives so much better! Anyone can call the activities director at these places to see if they need materials for craft projects (often old christmas cards and phone books are reused). Or even just offering to paint someone’s nails can make their day!

I also am a big advocate of planting a row in the garden for the foodbank. Next year, I think I’m going to plan an herb garden for the foodbank. Herbs are so expensive, but can make a huge difference in taste!

I’ve been looking in my trash cans lately and thinking, Wow, how does one person make so much?!!!!
I try to think about this when I go food shopping, but unlike loose produce, my favorite gluten free waffles come in a package which is, unfortunately not only not made from recycled materials, but is not able to be either recycled or reused. I have started contacting companies to complain about this.
I don’t know if it will do any good, but maybe if everyone does it……..

    good plan, Voice be heard!

and another note, how about trying to make them from some fabulous gluten free recipe?
I have a great cookbook called,
Gluten-Free Quick and Easy, by Carol Fenster, PH.D.
I have made some killer pancakes and now always have alternative flour mixes to use!
    try it!

    Thanks for writing…
